May 21, 2026

Sergi Abadal Cavallé, telecommunications engineer and alumnus of the Barcelona School of Telecommunications Engineering (ETSETB), has been awarded the National Research Award for Young Researchers 2025. This award recognises the merit of Spanish researchers under the age of 40 and their outstanding achievements in the early stages of their careers.

Abadal, researcher at the Department of Computer Architecture at the UPC, received the Matilde Ucelay Award in Engineering and Architecture for his outstanding work as a young researcher in the field of computer and communication engineering, contributing significant advances in massively parallel computing architectures and in the development of efficient next-generation interconnections. He has also been awarded a European Proof of Concept grant.

Beyond his research activity, Abadal maintains a strong link with teaching at ETSETB, delivering courses in the Bachelor’s Degree in Telecommunications Technologies and Services Engineering (GRETST) and in the Sequential Academic Programme (PARS) in Telecommunications Engineering. He is also notable for his science outreach activities in secondary schools through the Escolab programme, bringing technology closer to the classroom.

Two other UPC researchers have also been awarded: Jezabel Curbelo Hernández, National Research Award for Young Researchers 2025 in the María Andresa Casamayor category, in Mathematics and Information and Communication Technologies; and Maria Pau Ginebra Molins, awarded the National Research Award 2025 in the Leonardo Torres Quevedo category, in Engineering and Architecture.

The awards ceremony took place on 4 May at the Royal Palace of Pedralbes, in an event presided over by King Felipe VI, with the participation of the Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities, Diana Morant; the President of the Government of Catalonia, Salvador Illa; and the Mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni.
