Master Thesis Distance Bounding Protocols for Wireless Vehicular Communications


Hosting Laboratory:
- Design of a secure wireless communication link that allows communication only in a predefined range (distance bounding).
- Literature research on existing distance bounding protocols and their suitability for wireless vehicular communications.
- Implementation and simulation of a suitable distance bounding protocol in an existing 802.11p link-‐level simulator.
- Proposal and implementation of a real­‐time distance­‐bounding concepts for a software defined radio architecture.

Master Thesis Frequency­‐Hopping Parameter Estimation for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle(UAV) Radio Links


Hosting Laboratory:
- Design a software­‐defined­‐radio system that is able to identify the unknown parameter of an UAV radio communication link.
- Literature Research on principal methods for frequency­‐hopping parameter estimation.
- Measure unknown UAV frequency hopping spread spectrum [FHSS] modulated downlink signal with a state­‐of‐the­‐art­‐software defined radio testbed.
- Implementation of a suitable parameter estimation method in Matlab/Phyton/LabView.
- Validation of the implementation in a real‐world scenario.

Description:
- You will create a geometry-based stochastic channel model in MATLAB that will reproduce by simulation the channel impulse responses observed in real-world vehicular radio channels.

- You will perform a literature research on radio channel modelling techniques currently used for vehicular communication.

- You will identifythe relevant parameters to be included in a GSCM based on available measurement data.

- You will implemented and extend the current GSCM based on the parametrized data.

- You will validate the channel model using meaningful metrics (e.g. Delay Spread and Doppler Spread)

Ray tracing is an important tool for 5G channel modelling for both mm-Wave high bitrate links as well as ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC). The accuracy of ray tracing comes at high computational complexity


Description:
- You use modern GPU techniques to achieve a fast implementation.

- You translate the MATLAB code of an existing ray-tracing tool into a GPU, C or C++ environment in order to significantly reduce the simulation time.

- You validate the implementation by comparison with measurements of real-world radio propagation channels

Master Thesis "Efficient Implementation of a Ray-Tracing Tool"


Ray tracing is an important tool for 5G channel modelling for both mm-Wave high bitrate links as well as ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC). In this master thesis the student will work on the AIT ray tracing tool adding new important features.


Description:
- Reduction of the computational complexity and simulation time needed for the construction of the reflection image-tree (e.g. inspired by techniques used in video game industry) without degradation of the prediction accuracy

- Improvement of the prediction accuracy of an existing ray-tracing simulation tool by including radio propagation mechanisms not yet included, e.g. multiple diffraction mechanisms

- Literature research on efficient image-tree construction and iterative multiple diffraction implementation in order to identify already existing solutions

- Validation of the implementation by comparison with measurements of real-world radio propagation channels

Context:

Bell Labs has helped weave the technological fabric of modern society. Since its founding in 1925, technology from Bell Labs has shaped the ways people live, work and play. Over the past 80 years, the Bell Labs R&D community has made seminal scientific discoveries, created powerful new technologies, and built the world's most advanced and reliable networks.


Project:
In 2010 the theoretical capacity limit of a single-mode fiber was found. The forecasted demand of data traffic will exhaust the capacity of the installed fiber plant by 2020. New fiber-optic designs are required in order to guarantee an efficient and sustainable increase in terms of cost and energy consumption for the following 30 years. Spatial division multiplexing in its two flavors, multi-mode and multi-core fibers, has become the new research paradigm. The scope of the project is to investigate on advanced transmission and detection techniques to exploit the capacity of the new optical fiber.

Furthermore he/she will perform system tests and possibly will support the team during scientific measurement campaigns. The subject offers several internship and Master Thesis topics like:


- Simulation and analysis of receiver schemes for optical ranging
- Receiver hardware and software design
- Distortion and channel analysis of the system and further development of post processing units with respect to the scenario requirements
- Design, implementation, verification and performance analysis of algorithms for the optical ranging
- Evaluation of measurements and analysis of the results in relation with the expected performance
