Context The Satellite Networks department plays since many years a leading role in Europe in the conception and investigation of novel system concepts, transmission techniques, protocols and applications for Satellite Communications. The main application-areas are satellite IP-based transmission based on DVB standards, satellite communications for emergency and disaster scenarios, satellite communications for aeronautical applications (including both (“Air-Traffic Management” and “Air Passenger Communications”) and interactive Satellite TV provision to mobile handheld terminals. Last but not least, the Satellite Networks department leads since 2004 the European Satellite Communications Network of Excellence, SatNEx.
Project Source and channel coding techniques.
Description In the dynamic landscape of modern computing, file synchronization across multiple devices has become an indispensable tool. While cloud-based solutions like Dropbox and Google Drive provide user-friendly file synchronization, they often encounter constraints in terms of efficiency and scalability. For local and enterprise networks, the rsync protocol, a cornerstone of the Linux toolkit, serves as the benchmark for remote file synchronization. This Master's thesis delves into the exploration and implementation of an alternative to rsync, utilizing a powerful class of source and channel coding techniques known as set reconciliation algorithms. |

Project Channel coding and algebraic coding techniques.
Description In this thesis, set reconciliation based on BCH codes is investigated. In particular, potential speed-ups of known decoding algorithms for BCH codes are considered. The improved methods are implemented in SageMath/Python and their performance is evaluated via simulations. |

The specific research project focuses on metasurfaces for Solid State Lighting applications, with a particular emphasis on artificial and virtual reality. As these technologies continue to advance, the demand for higher resolutions, larger contrast, higher efficiencies, and compactness is ever-growing. These challenges require solutions that involve cutting-edge technologies in various disciplines such as optical engineering, photonics, and solid-state lighting. Some of the main challenges to be accomplished by the next generation of artificial and virtual reality devices require the development of ultra-small micro LEDs. Despite the size specifications of these micro LEDs, it is necessary for them to maintain high efficiency, brightness, and also provide specific radiation patterns. In this context, metasurfaces appear as one interesting element to achieve some of the goals, thanks to their ability to control light propagation and emission in compact spaces.
The student(s) ' responsibilities will involve developing computational methods to analyze metasurfaces' response and design optimal structures.
Responsibilities: - Conduct literature research on the use of metasurfaces to control various desired properties of light. - Develop and test numerical models to solve light propagation in nanostructures. |

The proposed area of investigation deals with numerical methods and computational techniques to model the processes of photo-conversion and light scattering in power LED (Light-Emitting Diodes) emitters. An optics model of thin film micro-structures ought to be developed, tested, and experimentally validated. The student will have the opportunity to closely work with a team working on advanced multiphysics LED models to guide us in the understanding of a number of exciting fundamental physical mechanisms.

Description Non-terrestrial networks may be deployed using low-earth orbit (LEO) and geostationary (GEO) satellites, and at any altitudes in between. The low altitude of LEO satellites results in shorter propagation delays and lower propagation loss, but also result in many mobility events due to the satellite movement, as compared to GEO. There may be energy saving opportunities on both network and terminal side in combining the use of e.g. LEO and GEO satellites that is a multi-orbit solution.
