WednesdayTalk: Onion adventures: how to use onion services and the Tor network
Tor is an important tool providing privacy and anonymity online. The property of anonymity itself is more than just providing an encrypted connection between the source and the destination of a given conversation. There is in fact a lot of information that can still be learned by just observing encrypted communications.

WednesdaySeminar “Modelling the brain: resting-state MEG functional network analysis” given by Dr. Silvana Silva-Pereira
We are pleased to announce and invite you to the upcoming SPCOM seminar. A popular way to analyze resting-state EEG and MEG data is to treat them as a functional network in which sensors are identified with nodes and the interaction between channel time-series with the network connections.

FridayTalk: Quantitative Methods in Sports: Evolution and Application - Sergi Oliva, Director of Analytics & Strategy at the Philadelphia 76ers
Abstract: Starting with Baseball in the 90s, quantitative methods have creeped their way into all levels of decision-making in professional sports organizations. Even though this evolution has taken different forms and speeds depending on the sport or league, most have shared several common themes: the incremental availability of richer data sources fueled by a growing interest in their potential, the challenge in communicating actionable insights to very successful and traditionally-minded industry leaders, and, nonetheless, the overall evolution of the conventional standards towards more analytically-oriented principles. In this talk, focused primarily but not exclusively in basketball, we will have a brief look at the early stages of the field, before discussing the growth in its data sources, the type of research that was made possible, the transformational effects of some of those results in creating new strategical standards, and the challenges of implementing quantitative-based insights into the day-to-day decision-making of a sports organization.

ThursdayConference: "The Internet of Nano-Things: From Nanomaterials to Macrosystems", Prof. Josep Miquel Jornet, University at Buffalo, NY
The tools provided by nanotechnologies allow us to create new types of devices not only smaller, but also with unprecedented properties. Among others, nano-biosensors and nanoactuators, capable of observing and controlling subcellular processes with molecular precision, have been experimentally demonstrated in recent years. At the moment these devices are neither autonomous nor intelligent, but they require the control and supervision of a local operator to operate. However, in the same way that telecommunication between virtually all objects in our environment has changed the way we live, communication between nanosensors and, eventually, their interconnection on the Internet, will revolutionize the diagnosis and treatment of various Diseases, from different types of cancer to neurodegenerative diseases. In this seminar, we will introduce the concept of the Internet of Nano-things and we will define the role and opportunities that telecommunication engineers have in the development of this area of research. First, review the state of the art in terms of emitters and detectors, modulators and demodulators, antennas and groupings of antennas at optical frequencies and in the Terahertz band. We will also study new channel models for the human body that take into account the complexity and interactions of biological tissues with electromagnetic waves at these frequencies. Finally, based on the capabilities of the nano-devices and channel properties, we will discuss mechanisms to be able to transmit information between nano-devices in a reliable, efficient and biocompatible manner.

WednesdayTalk: My Recurrent Neighbour is Now PyTorched: a Long story Shortened in Time with deep Messages By: Santi Pascual, PhD Researcher at TALP
PyTorch is a Python Deep Learning framework, where we can mainly build Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs or NNs), similarly to what we achieve with TensorFlow, Keras, Theano, Caffe2, and many others. There is, however, a hidden beauty behind PyTorch, and a nice level of simplicity to achieve our Deep Learning goals quickly and effectively.
